This pamphlet is about safe driving. It's written on the premise you're a good driver. Its purpose is to help make you an even safer driver.
Driving experts say there is very little that's accidental about a highway crash, death or injury. Each is caused by factors -- either the car, the road, the driver or a combination of the three -- we can influence.
Before you buy
Cars vary in performance, so before you buy consider:
Safety records. Check published listings of how auto occupants fare in crashes. (Your insurance agent may be able to get you one.)
Safety features such as air bags, which inflate to protect you in a crash. (New cars are equipped with at least driver's side air bags which supplement seat belts. Always buckle up your seat belts.)
Condition of used cars. Are they roadworthy? Does safety equipment, including belts, work? Have their safety recalls been heeded?
Maintaining your car
Have vehicle properly maintained by periodically checking:
Cooling system, especially hoses
Brakes and fluid
Belts
Tires, including spare
Lights and turn signals
Wiper blades and washer fluid
Engine and transmission fluids
If you buy a new car, carefully read the owner's manual, a good source of information on maintenance and safe operation.
Emergency equipment
Consider carrying a flashlight, flares and a fire extinguisher in your vehicle.
